eDirectory - Scalable LDAP
The eDirectory software is best known as the directory that worked with NetWare in days past. It started back in like 1990 called Novell Directory Services, or NDS. Over time Novell got it working on Windows, then Solaris and Linux. It can also run on mainframes now too. NetWare is long gone at this point. Novell was broken up into three different companies. Both Novell and NetIQ use eDirectory in many of their product offerings. It has grown well beyond it's NetWare origins. It is one of the most scalable LDAP directories on the market. Today it runs on either 64 bit Windows or 64 bit Linux, along with the mainframe. Solaris support is being phased out.
I have worked with eDirectory from the very earliest days of NDS. Over the years I have learned much about the software. It is great software. Like any directory software, there are certain things that administrators need to be mindful of. It also has it's own little idiosyncrasies. On this site I am going to lay out many of the things I have learned over time.
One thing I will make note here for those considering if they should run eDirectory on Windows or Linux that I would highly recommend going with Linux. When the software is running it will run well on both platforms. Windows has a flashy GUI on the server. But there are a number of limitations with running eDirectory on Windows due to certain architectural constraints of the Windows platform. The software is also much easier to manage on a Linux environment for remote administration.
